It is an antipsychotic drug. It works by the changing the actions of chemicals in the brain. The symptoms such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) are can be treated by using abilify. It is not known that usage of this drug in children of age about13yrs if it is effective or not, or children of age 10yrs with suffering from bipolar disorder.
It is also used in children of 6yrs or older who have a Tourette’s disorder, or symptoms of autism (irritability, mood swings, and self-injury).
Information about abilify:
Abilify is not used in psychotic conditions related to dementia-related conditions. Some people have thoughts when taking medicine for major depressive disorders. Stay alert to change in mood or symptoms.
How abilify should be taken:
Take abilify as how the doctor prescribed. Follow the directions written on your prescription. Your doctor may change the dose to get the better results. Don’t take medication in large or small amount or for a longer period than recommended.
Abilify can be taken before or after meals. While taking the tablet do not swallow the whole tablet at a time. Allow the drug to dissolve in your mouth first before chewing, if not you may take the drug along with water.You should not stop using abilify suddenly because it may make the condition worse.
What should be avoided during the time of taking abilify:
This medication decreases the thinking capacity of your brain, proper care should be taken to avoid accidents while driving and the works in which body alertness required. Do not get up fast from a sit or laying for a long period, it may cause dizziness. Alcohol consumption can trigger the side-effects more. Avoid becoming dehydrated or overheated, drink lot of fluids.
It is recommended that starting and target dose of abilify us 10 or 15mg/day administered once in a day without regards to meals. Abilify can be systemically effective in a dose range of 10-30 mg/day when administered in tablet form, doses higher than 10-15 mg/day were not effective than 10-15mg/day.
The recommended target dose of abilify is 10mg/day. The starting daily dose of tablet formulation in this patients was 2 mg, which is titrated to 5mg after 2 days and to be the target dose of 10mg. abilify can be administered without regards to the meal.
Bipolar 1 disorder:
Acute treatment of manic and mixed episodes
The starting dose in adults is 15mg given once daily and 10-15mg once In daily with valproate. Abilify can be given with regards to meals.
The starting dose in pediatric patients (10-17yrs) as is 2mg /day after 2 additional days. Recommended dosing with valproate is the same. The subsequent dose should be increased, if needed, should be administered in 5mg/day increments.
Pediatric patients 6-18yrs)
The recommended dose range for a Tourette’s disorder is 5-20mg/day. For patients weighing less than 50kgs dose should be started at 2mg/day with a target dose of 5mg/day, after 2days dose is be increased to 10mg/day in patients who don not achieve control over symptoms. For patients 50kg or more weight, dosing should be started from 2mg/day for 2 days , and it is increased to 5mg /day on day 8th, the dose should be increased to 20mg/day for who do not achieve control over symptoms.
