What is Acrophobia:
Acrophobia is a fear of heights. What exactly acrophobia is? It is an abnormal fear of heights. The word “acrophobia” is derived from the Greek words “acron” (height) and “Phobos” (fear). It is a natural fear. To some extent, there is nothing wrong having the fear of heights. It is a God-given defense mechanism against things like walking off a cliff. The problem starts when the natural healthy thing becomes a morbid (unsound or paranoia) fear. This type of unhealthy fear is called acrophobia, is usually overwhelming (it freeze you in your tracks). If you suffer from this phobia, don’t think that you are different or alone. There are thousands of people suffer from this phobia including some famous personalities such as John Madden, Isaac Asimov, Woody Allen, Stanley Kubrick, and Whoopi Goldberg.
Many people with this phobia feel the symptoms like dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, excessive, dry mouth, sweating, shaking, feeling sick, heart palpitations, and the inability to speak. Other symptoms of this phobia also include becoming mad, fear of dying, a sensation of detachment from reality or even a full blown panic attacks.
Many experts think that the fear of heights enters your life at one point in your past. There was an event that happened to you that linked to heights with some type of emotional incidence. They think the condition can also be initiated by multiple events like seeing something in TV, movies, or perhaps even seeing someone else experience trauma involving heights.
Overcoming of acrophobia:
It is important to know that the drugs do not cure acrophobia. They temporarily decrease the symptoms by using chemicals. The side effects of the drugs may be worse than the acrophobia. Do not take drugs without a doctor’s prescription.
Hypnosis does not cure fear of heights. It also suppresses the symptoms of it, but instead of using chemicals you allow someone to control your mind.
Stop walking as soon as you feel any fear in your mind. Pay attention again to the feeling and make yourself aware of those feelings. For the first time, don’t run from what you are feeling at that point and don’t pretend that those feelings are not there. You must clearly make a choice, a choice that you are in complete control of yours. You can choose to walk forward to the edge or leave, and stay right where you are.
