Baclofen is used as muscle relaxant and anti-spasmodic, it is mainly used to treat the symptoms like spasms, pain, and stiffness.

Dosage pattern of Baclofen:

Adult dose

Intial dose: the gradually increasing dosages suggested. It is about, 5mg to be taken orally for 3times in aday.then 10mg to be taken orally 3 times a day, then 15mg to be taken orally for 3 times a day

Maintenance dose: it is different for each person

Maximum dose: it is about 80mg to be taken orally 4 times a day

Use: it is used in voluntary muscle spasm, cerebrovascular accidents, meningitis, traumatic head injury. Tumore in the spinal cord, motor neuron disease,

Cerebral spasticity:

Intrathecal: patient must show positive responce

First test dose: 50mcg can injected in the intrathecal space over 1 min

Second test dose: If the first dose is not positive, then inject 75mcg after 24hrs of the after first dose,

Third test dose: 100mcg may be administered 24hrs after the second dose, if there is positive response in the third dose the patient may not be considered for the intrathecal therapy.

Maintenance dose: for long term continuous infusion: 22-1400mcg/day with most patients adequately maintained on 90 to 703mcg per day.

Uses: for the management of severe spasticity.

Maximum dose: it is about 80mg per day 20mg for 4 times a day.

Uses : to decrease the symptoms of the voluntary muscle spasticity.

Baclofen Overdose:

Baclofen overdose may be fatal, seek immediate medical emergency.

Symptoms of overdose:

  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breathe
  • Convulsions
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle weakness

Baclofen side effects:

Severity: moderate

Less common

  • Skin rash
  • Fainting
  • Hallucinations
  • Mental depression
  • Buzzing sounds in ears
  • Chest pain
  • Dark colored urine

Severity: minor

More common:

  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness
  • Unusual weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

Less common:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Painful urination
  • Frequent urination
  • Loss of appetite
  • Numbness
  • Sexual problems
  • Swelling weight gain
  • Tiredness

Post-treatment side effects:

  • Convulsions
  • Hallucinations
  • Increase in muscle spasm
  • Nervousness
