Molluscum contagiosum

It is an infection which is caused by the virus which belongs to poxvirus family. The lesions appear as a dome-shaped, round, pink, waxy papules on the skin. They may appear anywhere on the body, but most commonly seen on the face, armpits, neck, arms, and hands. It is a communicable disease and it is transmitted through clothes and towels, or other objects used by an infected person. It can also spread by the sexual contact with a person infected with the disease. People having weak immune systems and affected cancer or AIDS having more chances of getting this disease. Warts are the condition of the skin, which are caused by human papilloma virus (HPV). They appear as fleshy, soft, raised lesions on the skin surface. They can occur on any parts of the body. They are highly contagious and can be transferred from a person to another by using soaps, towel, or through skin lesions. Cantharone (Cantharidin) is also referred as the beetle juice is a blistering agent that is derived from the blister of beetle.  This compound is used as a therapeutic agent for both molluscum and warts. It is mainly used in children as it painless during treatment. The pain may occur after 24 hours of treatment, it may last for a few days. It is applied directly on warts and molluscum affected areas are covered with a Band-Aid. In 4 hours of time, it should be peeled off the covering and wash the area carefully with soap and water to completely remove the Cantharone. If there is a severe burning before the time is up, you can remove the Band-Aid and wash the area soon. Blisters will form in the time about 3-8 hours. Warts are destroyed by this application of this chemical.

Some patients are very sensitive to cantharidin and may experience burning sensation at the site of application, this solution should be applied carefully only to warts and molluscum avoiding surrounding skin.

The main advantage of this chemical is that it is painless when applied and usually very effective.  In addition to this, the single application gives good results. There may be a discomfort during the time of washing of the treated areas and occasionally the response of the blistering agent is more severe and cause painful blisters and resulting in scarring. Some of the lesions may require a second treatment and there may chances of new lesions may appear in between treatments.

In general, cantharidin molluscum treatment is very favorable for dermatologists and it is simple and effective therapy.
