Metoprolol is generally available in tablet and is prescribed for the people suffering from high blood pressure and thereby regulating the blood circulation. It is also used to treat angina, heart failure, hypertension and etc.

Information about Metoprolol:

This medicine should not to be used if the patient suffering from serious heart problem, sinus syndrome, slow heart rate, severe circulation problem. In some rare cases, this drug may cause even fainting.

This medicine should be used as exactly how the doctor has prescribed and it is must for the patient to follow the directions written on the prescription label. It should not be used in small or large doses and also not for longer duration than prescribed. This medicine should be taken for only 4-8 weeks and if any extension is required then consult your doctor.

Do not crush or chew the tablets or capsules. Do not swallow the tablets or medicines rather consume it with a full glass of water.

Dosage pattern of Metoprolol:

Adult dosage:

For Hypertension:

Initial dose: it is about 100 mg to be taken orally once in a day in single or divided doses

Maintenance dose: it is about 100-450 mg to be taken orally once in a day

For Angina pectoris:

Initial dose: it is about 50 mg to be taken orally twice in a day

Maintenance dose: it is about 100-400 mg once in a day

For Myocardial infarction:

Initial dose: it is about 5 mg IV for every 2 min

Maintenance dose: it is about 100 mg twice in a day.

For Congestive heart failure:

For this it suggested to take about 25 mg  orally once in a day.

Use: It is used to treat the class II or III heart failure

For Paediatric dosage:

Initial dose: it is about 1 mg/kg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose: it is about 2 mg/kg to be taken orally once in a day.

Metoprolol overdose:

The symptoms of Metoprolol overdose are fatal. Hence, immediately the patient should consult doctor if any kind of side effects are experienced or seen.

Overdose symptoms:

  • Unconsciousness
  • Very drowsy or sleepy
  • Bluish color
  • Stopping of heart
