Omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid) is a proton pump inhibitor; it can decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is mainly used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and also Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is used to the healing of erosive esophagitis.
It is also given to prevent gastric ulcer caused by the infection with helicobacter pylori; it can give immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.
Information about Omeprazole:
It can be used as the exactly how the doctor has prescribed, directions written on the prescription label should be followed by the patient. It is not to be used in small or large doses and also no longer than prescribed. This medicine can give for 4-8weeks only. Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Do not crush or chew the delayed release capsules.
It is allergic to the drugs like omeprazole and pantoprazole. Taking the drugs like proton pump inhibitors can cause a bone fracture in the hip, wrist, and spine.
Dosage pattern of Omeprazole:
It is about 20mg orally once a day before a meal,
Helicobacter pylori infection:
Dual therapy: It is about omeprazole 40mg to be taken orally once a day, clarithromycin 500mg orally 3 times a day
Triple therapy: it is about 20mg and clarithromycin 500mg amoxicillin 1000mg all were given twice a day for 10days.
The recommended dose is 20-40mg given once a day by intravenously , dose impairment is not needed with mild to moderate liver impairment.
The dose is based on the body weight
Body weight is about: 55kg -10mg
Body weight is about: 55kgs or greater- 20mg
1month to less than 1 year of age : 0.5mg/kg
Gastric or duodenal ulcer: in adults
It is about 80mg administered intravenously followed by the 30min infusion of 8mg/h for the total duration of 72hrs.
Zollinger- Ellison syndrome:
It is about 60mg to be taken orally once a day.
The overdose of omeprazole is fatal, seek immediate medical emergency.
