Omeprazole works by decreasing the level of acid produced in the stomach and is a proton-pump inhibitor. It is commonly used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and also Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to heal the erosive esophagitis.

This medication is also given to prevent gastric ulcer caused by the infection with helicobacter pylori and can give immediate relief from the heartburn symptoms.

Information about Omeprazole:

This medicine is to taken in the way your doctor prescribes and it is must for the patient to follow the instructions so provided on the prescription label. It is not to be used either in small or large doses and also not to be used for longer duration than prescribed. This medicine should be given from 4-8 weeks only. This tablet should be consumed with a full glass of water. Crushing or chewing of the tablet should not be done as it may cause the drug not to work properly.

This drug interacts with the drugs like omeprazole and pantoprazole. Taking this medicine along with the drugs like proton pump inhibitors may cause a bone fracture in the hip, wrist, and spine.

Dosage pattern of Omeprazole:

Adult dose

Duodenal ulcer:

It is about 20mg orally once a day before a meal,

Helicobacter pylori infection:

Dual therapy: It is about omeprazole 40mg to be taken orally once a day, clarithromycin 500mg orally 3 times a day

Triple therapy:? it is about 20mg and clarithromycin 500mg amoxicillin 1000mg all were given twice a day for 10days.

Erosive esophagitis:

The recommended dose is 20-40mg given once a day by intravenously , dose impairment is not needed with mild to moderate liver impairment.

Pediatric patient:

The dose is based on the body weight

Body weight is about: 55kg -10mg

Body weight is about: 55kgs or greater- 20mg

1month to less than 1 year of age : 0.5mg/kg

Gastric or duodenal ulcer: in adults

It is about 80mg administered intravenously followed by the 30min infusion of 8mg/h for the total duration of 72hrs.

Zollinger- Ellison syndrome:

It is about 60mg to be taken orally once a day.

Omeprazole overdose:

The overdose of omeprazole is fatal, seek immediate medical emergency.
