Ativan (Lorazepam) is one among the group of benzodiazepine. Generaly, it is used to treat seizures, and it is also called as an anti-epileptic drug. In some cases, it is also used to treat anxiety, panic disorders (including agoraphobia) in adults.

Information about Ativan:

This medicine is not to be used in the patients who are suffering from glaucoma or severe liver disorders. Immediate medical emergency is needed,  if you have worsening symptoms such as depression, unusual changes in the behaviour or suicidal thoughts or hurting yourself.

Do not consume whenever you are undergoing any medication. Lorazepam is habit-forming, so never share this medicine with others. Keep reach out of the children.

Dosage pattern of Ativan:

Adult dose:

For Anxiety:

The minimum dose for adults is about 3mg to be taken orally per day divided into 2-3 doses, it may be increased to 0.5mg more until the symptoms of the seizures were diminished.

Use: used in symptoms of anxiety

Anesthesia:

IM: it is about 0.05mg/kg , maximum dose is 4mg

IV: it is about 2mg total or 0.044

Pediatric patients:

It is administered orally, to minimize the drowsiness. The initial dose is based on the weight of the child.it is about 0.01-0.03mg/kg per day, given in two to three divided doses. If the doses are not equally divided, the larger dose can be given.

Geriatric dose:

There are no clinical trial experiments with Ativan in seizure disorder, in general, elderly patients should have start low doses, but in the close observance.

Panic disorder:

Initial dose is about 2.5mg orally for every 2 times a day,

Maintenance dose: it is about 1mg to be taken orally per day

Maximum dose: it is about 4mg orally per day

Use: treatment of panic disorder

Pediatric dose

Seizures prophylaxis

10yrs of age 30kg body weight:

It is about 0.01mg /kg per day to 0.05mg/kg per day orally administered in 2-3 divided doses.

Use: treatment of petit mal epilepsy

Ativan overdose:

The symptoms of overdose are as follows:

  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Confusion
  • Fainting
  • coma
