Clindamycin is nothing but an antibiotic, that fights against bacteria in the body. Therefore, it is majorly used to treat the serious infections caused by bacteria.

This mediation may cause life-threatening problems. Hence, immediate medical treat ment is required if any of the side effects are seen. Majorly this medicine causes diarrhoea and if the diarrhea is watery or bloody stop using this medication and seek immediate related treatment from the doctor.

This medicine should be used as exactly how the doctor has prescribed and it is must for the patient to follow the directions mentioned on the prescription label. It should not be used in small or large doses and also not for longer duration than prescribed. This medicine should be taken for only 4-8 days and if any extension is required then consult your doctor.

Do not crush or chew the tablets or capsules. Do not swallow the tablets or capsules rather consume it with a full glass of water.

Dosage Pattern of Clindamycin:

Adult dose

For Bacterial Infection:

Oral:

For serious infection: can be taken about 150-300mg for every 6hrs.

For more severe Infection: the dose is about 300-450mg, to be taken orally for every 6hrs.

Parenteral:

For Serious infection: it is about 600-1,200mg via IV or IM injection per day in 2-4 equal doses.

For Severe infection: 1,200 -2,700mg via IV or IM injection per day in 2-4 equally divided dose.

More severe infection: it is about 4,800mg via IV injection  per day

Uses: For serious infections that are caused due to the organisms such as  streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, respiratory tract infections.

Pediatric dose:

The pediatric dose of any antibiotics depends upon the weight and age of the child.

Oral:

Body weight 10kg or less then the,

minimum recommended dose is about 37.5mg to be taken orally  three times in a day.

Body weight about 11kg or more:

For serious infection: 8-12mg /kg to be taken orally per day, in 3-4 equal doses.

For severe infection: 13-16mg/kg to be taken orally 3-4 equally divided doses.

Clindamycin overdose:

The overdose of clindamycin may be fatal and hence immediate emergency medical treatment is recommended.

Clindamycin side effects:

Severity: major

Rare:

  • Red, swollen, and scaly skin
  • Loss of heat from the body
  • Cracks in the skin

Incidents that are unknown:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Blurred vision
  • Chest pain
  • Chills
  • Bloody urine
  • Confusion
  • Dark urine
  • Diarrhea
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Lower back pain

Gastrointestinal problems like pseudomembranous colitis symptoms may occur during or after antibacterial treatment, an unpleasant metallic taste reported at high doses of clindamycin through IV infusion.
