Effexor (venlafaxine): Uses, Dosage & Side Effects

Effexor (venlafaxine) is used for treating the patients suffering from depression, anxiety, panic disorders and etc. In other words, this drug is known as an antidepressant drug. It belongs to the group of Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSNRI).

Information about Effexor:

It is not recommended if the patient is suffering from glaucoma and it is also not to given if the patient is treated with methylene blue injection.

Some people experienced suicidal thoughts when they took this drug for the first time. If the patient is seen with the symptoms like behavioral or mood changes, anxiety, irritability, aggressive restless, hyperactive and etc, then immediately consult your doctor.

Do not give this medicine to the younger people of 18yrs old without the advice of the doctor. This medicine should not be used for children or infants. Pregnant ladies should consult doctor before intake of this medicine.

Do not consume alcohol while you are under any medication.

Dosage pattern of Effexor:

Initial dose:

The minimum dose is about 75 mg to be taken once in a day, administered in 2-3 divided doses after meals, the dosage may be increased up to 150 mg -225mg per day, if required. The maximum dose ia about 225mg and more than this is not recommended.

Women during pregnancy:

Neonates who are exposed to the Effexor are hospitalized and developed complications when treating the pregnant women. If your doctor recommends this medicine then, he/she should consider the potential risks and benefits of the treatment.

Patients with liver problems:
If the paien is suffering from liver problems then their total daily dose is reduced by 50% in patients with mild to moderate hepatic problems. Sometimes, the dose is maintained same in patients.

Patients with renal problems:

If the patient is suffering from renal problem then their total daily dosage is reduced to 25% in patients with  mild and moderate. Individual dosing should be maintained in the case of these renal impaired patients.

Effexor Overdose:

Seek emergency medical attention in case, the following overdose symptoms are seen or experienced.


  • Severe headache

  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain
  • Blurred vision
