Fluoxetine is used to treat the patient suffering from the depression, anxiety, panic disorder and etc. This drug is also known as an anti-depressant drug. This medicine is grouped under the class of Selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSNRI).

Information about Fluoxetine:

This medicine should not be given if the patient is suffering from glaucoma or if the patient is treated or going to treated with methylene blue injection.

In some cases, people experienced suicidal thoughts when they used this medicine for the first time. If the patient is experiencing the behavioral or mood changes include, anxiety, irritability, aggressive restless, hyperactive and etc then seek immediate medical emergency.

Do not give this medicine to the younger people of 18yrs old or below without the advice of the doctor.

Fluoxetine is not recommended for children.

Dosage pattern of Fluoxetine:

Adult dose:

For Bulimia

Immediate release oral formulations:

The minimum dose is about 60 mg can be given orally once in a day or else as prescribed by doctor.

Use: It is used for acute and maintenance treatment of vomiting behavior and bulimia nervosa

For Depression:

Immediate release oral formulations:

Initial dose: The dose is about 20mg to be taken orally once in a day, increased after several weeks in insufficient clinical effect observed

Maintenance dose: 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a  day.

Maximum dose should be about 80mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Delayed release oral capsule:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 90mg to be orally once in a week.

Use: It is used for acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder.

For Obsessive-compulsive disorder:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 20mg to be taken orally once in a day and  increase after several weeks in sufficient clinical effect observation.

Maintenance dose: this dose is about 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose should be about 80mg to be taken orally once in a  day.

Use: It is used for acute and maintenance treatment of obsessions and compulsions in the patient with that disease.

For Panic disorder:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 10mg to be taken orally once in a day and increase after several weeks in sufficient clinical effect observation.

Maintenance dose: Thia dose is about 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose should be about 60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Use: It is used for acute treatment of panic disorder.

For Depression:

Immediate release oral formulations:

8-18yrs: The minimum dose is about 10mg to be taken orally once in a day and increase in dosage will be done after several weeks under medical observation (up to 20mg once in a day)

Maintenance dose: The dose is about 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose: The dose is about 60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Fluoxetine side effects:

  • Skin rash
  • Fever with chills
  • Muscle pain
  • Anxiety
  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
