Paroxetine is an antidepressant drug and is one among the group of selective Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SSNRI).

It is commonly used to treat with the depression, anxiety, obsessive, compulsive disorder, panic disorder and etc. It is used in combination with the medicine called olanzapine (Zyprexa) to treat bipolar disorders.

Information about Paroxetine:

It is not to be taken if the patients have glaucoma or if the patient may be treated methylene blue injection. It is not to be used if the patient had treated with MAO inhibitors like isocarboxazid, rasagiline.

Some people experienced suicidal thoughts when they are new to this drug. For this the patient’s family or care takers should give more attention towards his/her mood changes. If the patient are experiencing or seen with these symptoms then seek immediate medical emergency, the behavioural or mood changes may include, anxiety, irritability, aggressive restless, hyperactive and etc.

This medicine is not recommended to the children or the teenagers of below 18 years of age. In fact, this medicine can be given if and only if your doctor recommends.

Dosage pattern of Paroxetine:

Adult dose:

For Depression:

Immediate release oral formulations:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 20mg to be taken orally once in a day and increasing of the dose after several weeks is done under clinical observation.

Maintenance dose: 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose should be about 80mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Delayed release oral capsule:

Initial dose: This is about 25mg to be orally once in a day

Maintenance dose:It is about 25-62mg to be taken orally once in a day

Maximum dose: 62.5mg to be taken orally once in a day

Use: For acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorders.

Anxiety:

Immediate release

Initial dose: It is to be taken 20mg orally once in a day.

Maintenance dose: it is to be taken 20mg orally once in a day.

Maximum dose: 60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Controlled-release tablets:

Initial dose: 12.5orally to be taken once in a day.

For Obsessive-compulsive disorder:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 20mg to be taken orally once in a day and increase of dosage after several weeks should be done in clinical observation.

Maintenance dose: 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose should be about 80mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Use: For acute and maintenance treatment of obsessions and compulsions in a patient with that disease.

For Panic disorder:

Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 10mg to be taken orally once in a day and increase of dosage after several weeks should be done in clinical observation.

Maintenance dose: 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose should be about 60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Use: For the acute treatment of panic disorders.

For Depression:

(8-18yrs) Initial dose: The minimum dose is about 20mg to be taken orally once in a day and increase of dosage after several weeks should be done in clinical observation.

Maintenance dose: it is about 20-60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Maximum dose: it is about 60mg to be taken orally once in a day.

Paroxetine side effects:

If any of the following side effects are seen or experienced by the patient, then he/she must be taken to the doctor immediately.
