Trazodone is an antidepressant. This medication is generally used to treat the patient suffering from depressive disorder anxiety. Hence, this medicine is grouped under the group of antidepressant.

Information about Trazodone:

This medicine usage should be stopped and not to  be used if the patient is allergic and is treated with methylene blue injection. A very dangerous signs are observed when this medicine interacts with the another medicine. Mainly if this drug interacts with the MAO inhibitor.

Mood or behavioral changes such as anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, restlessness, hyperactivity, or suicidal thoughts may seen whenever the patient is undergoing this medication for the first time.

Dosage pattern of Trazodone:

For Depression:

Immediate release:

The minimum dosage of about 150mg to be taken orally per day in divided dose, and this may increase up to 50mg per day after 3-4yrs

Maximum dose is about 400mg to be taken orally per day in divided doses (if required).

Extended release:

The dosage can be taken about 150mg  orally once a day, and it is increased up to 75mg to be taken orally per every three days

Use: treatment of major depressive disorder.

Geriatric dose:

The minimum dosage of 20mg per day orally is recommended, the maximum dose of the 40mg per day, a maintenance dose is about 20-40mg per day.

For Anxiety disorder:

MOI inhibitors to treat psychiatric disorders:

At least 14days between discontinuation of a MAOI intended to treat psychiatric disorders and initiation of therapy with this drug

Trazodone Pregnancy:

Most of the pregnant ladies undergoing this medication late in the third trimester have reported some of the side effects that include respiratory diseases, temperature instability, vomiting, hypoglycemia, tremors, hyperreflexia and etc.

Trazodone Breastfeeding:

Breast feeding under going this medication is not recommended as it may effect your infant with drowsiness and some other side effects. Hence, it is important to consult your doctor if you are breast feeding.

Trazodone overdose:

The Trazodone medicine should be taken in minimum dosages. If you consume more than the minimum dose then it is said to be overdose and you should seek medical emergency for this. The symptoms that are experienced whenever you take an overdose of this medication include:

  • Chest pain

  • Fast breathing
